Project Remit

Overhaul and Refurbishment of 24m Westway Retail Park main totem and 13m secondary totem, advertising and helping to drive footfall to the retail tenants within the Westway Retail Park at Cumbernauld, off the M80 motorway.

Challenges that had to be overcome

Tender process to win the job, with fierce competition

27m Totem

  • With the size of structure and location of this totem, we had to work around the weather elements, always conscious of required handover date

13m Totem

  • This element of the project was in essence, an overhaul of the totem from the original structure.
  • The original totem’s outer panels had to be fully stripped and re-clad. This was due to the original totem being an open frame totem, with this project changing the appearance by boxing/closing the structure. To achieve this, there was a requirement for Structural Engineer reports, detailing load bearing and wind impact calculations to be carried out and approved, resulting in additional steel structural supports being mounted to the frame and new panels fabricated, to ensure the structure was sufficiently constructed, for stability.
  • The cladding panels were a bespoke fabrication, to accommodate the existing frame structure.
  • Due to the location of this totem, the work had to be carried out in a timely manner, due to traffic management requirements and work permits in place, to allow the positioning of the access equipment on the road, to gain access to the totem.

Project Manager/Project Statement

This project was a large-scale project with multiple stakeholders, which allowed Centurion Signs (UK) Ltd to show the versatility and multitude of disciplines that we can provide.  Not your typical signage project, with requirements of structural engineering input, structural drawings to required specifications, bespoke fabrication and large-scale painting alongside general signage requirements.

We delivered the brief from the client which as requested can be seen from the M80, to boost footfall traffic to the retailers at Westway Retail Park, Cumbernauld.

We wish all the retailers in the retail park, the very best.
